This full-day tour by Rent-a-Guide takes you to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in Jordan. The city is carved into the rocks of the mountains and was once the capital city and trade hub of the Nabatean people, an early Arab tribe that dominated the spice trade until around 100 CE. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, the unique archaeological site has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Middle East.
The tour leaves daily from Eilat and Sunday-Thursday, there is an option to book the tour with a flight from Tel Aviv to Eilat.
If you’ve booked a tour with transportation from Tel Aviv, flights depart from Sde Dov airport at 6:40 am.
In Eilat, a Rent-a-Guide representative holding a sign with your name printed on it will meet you at the airport and accompany you to your transportation to the Arava border crossing. After you’ve crossed the border into Jordan (some nationalities must acquire a Jordanian entry visa prior to crossing the border), you’ll depart for Petra, driving along Jordan’s desert highways and into the mountains to the village of Wadi Musa.
From the entrance to the site, you can either walk or, for a fee, go by horseback or chariot along the dirt road and through the Siq (canyon) to the entrance to Petra. Your tour guide will take you through the 45km city to visit monuments such as the Treasury, Royal Tombs, the Court, the Roman Theater, the Roman Street, Qasr al-Bint (the Palace of the Pharaoh’s daughter) and the many smaller monuments that dot the ancient city.
After your tour, you’ll stop at a local restaurant for an authentic Middle-Eastern lunch before driving to the port city of Aqaba for short visit and heading back across the border and to the airport.
