The story of what many consider the best hummus in Tel Aviv began in the late 1950’s with a man named Ali Karavan that used to walk around Jaffa with his little wheeled cart and sell his exceptional hummus.
In 1971, he opened his own place on a little Jaffa hill overlooking the sea, and called it Abu Hassan (the father of Hassan) as a tribute to his eldest son. Ever since, it’s known as one of the best places to eat Hummus in the Tel Aviv vicinity, and has become the mecca for masabaha (a type of hummus dish) lovers.
Abu Hassan opened up two more branches north in Tel Aviv, but the Jaffa location is still the most popular and frequently draws a line of people out the door during lunchtime.
In the fashion of a true hummus house, Abu Hassan is only open until the hummus is gone, so don’t wait too long.
