The weeklong Sukkot is one of the most fun-packed holidays of the year in Israel, and especially Tel Aviv, as tourists and locals of all ages flock take advantage of the festive atmosphere and mild weather by flocking to the beaches, parks and special events around town.

The holiday typically takes place in October and in 2016 — following Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur — will start on October 16 and end October 23. There is no public transportation and many businesses close on the first and last days of the holiday, but the intermediate days are business as usual, except that kids are out of school and many Israelis take days off from work.

Sukkot is the last holiday before the end of the summer season, so you’ll definitely notice an uptick in activity at Tel Aviv beaches, but there are also plenty of events going on around the city indoors and outside, including art exhibitions, concerts, sporting events and parties at bars and clubs.

You can also take the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and customs of the holiday. Many homes and restaurants in Tel Aviv build sukkahs outside for the holiday. The tradition is to eat in the sukkah to commemorate ancient times times when the Jews wandered in the wilderness. If you want to get a better feel for the traditional side of the holiday, it’s worth making the short trip to Jerusalem and the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, where almost everybody partakes in the customs.
