About Yom Hashoah
Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hashoah in Hebrew, in Israel is one of the most solemn days of the year, when the country mourns for the 6 million Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis in death camps and elsewhere during WWII.
What to Expect
This year Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on the evening of April 23, 2017 at which point almost all public and private entertainment venues will close until the the evening of April 24.
At 10:00 am on Monday, April 24, a siren will sound throughout the country for two minutes, and during that time, people stop whatever they are doing and stand in silence. If you are driving, keep in mind that traffic will also come to a stop, and drivers and passengers will stand at attention next to their vehicles until the siren finishes.
The day is also observed by television and radio stations, which show documentaries and movies about the Holocaust and play solemn music and Holocaust-themed programming throughout the evening and day.
